Town of Lake George hires accountant for regular audits - Post-Star

LAKE GEORGE -- The town has hired an outside auditor to conduct monthly reviews of its books.

The Town Board voted 3-1 with one abstention Monday to hire local certified public accountant Mary McKrell at a rate of $150 per hour. Councilwoman Fran Heinrich opposed the hiring because she said she had not been able to reach McKrell for an informal interview.

The hiring comes as the town tries to grapple with a recent audit by the state Office of the Comptroller that found significant issues with local payroll, procurement and purchasing procedures, and a lack of Town Board oversight.

McKrell has regularly worked with the town for more than a decade, and officials credited her with stepping in to help with other challenges, beginning when a town comptroller suddenly resigned in the mid-1990s.

"She has no conflicts of interests or anything. She worked with my wife for years," said Supervisor Frank McCoy.

Lake George Comptroller Kathy Gleason suggested McKrell's services only be accessed a few times a year. But Town Board members thought a regular review would better fit what the public has been seeking over the last two months.

"The public wants CPA involvement," said Councilman Vinnie Crocitto.

Crocitto suggested the Town Board interview McKrell prior to the hire, but he was overruled.

"I want to get this moving," McCoy said.

McKrell has already been assisting the town with some minor reviews of its books, which Heinrich said was inappropriate.

"The board never OK'd it," she said. "We need to be involved with what she is working on."

Councilwoman Caryl Clark abstained from the vote to hire McKrell.
