Ex-accountant pleads guilty to stealing from USC - Erie Times-News

A former accountant at the University of South Carolina has pleaded guilty to taking nearly $180,000 from the school several years ago.

Thirty-five-year-old Lawrence Godwin III of Camden was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to breach of trust and forgery in December.

Circuit Judge Casey Manning sentenced Godwin to 90 days in jail and five years of probation. Godwin also must pass random drug tests to avoid a full 10-year sentence.

The money was taken in 2005 and 2006 and was discovered during an audit.

Godwin has repaid $59,000. The university's insurance company has paid the rest.

A psychiatrist testified for Godwin that he had become addicted to heroin and started stealing money to buy the drug.
