Bishop: 'Listen to what they had to say'

CINCINNATI, July 11 (UPI) -- Cincinnati Archdiocese Auxiliary Bishop Joe Binzer -- a former accountant -- says he learned one of the best ways to solve problems is careful listening.

Binzer already had a career as an accountant when a friend asked him what he wanted to do with the rest of his life and then suggested he become a priest, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Binzer said he considered his friend's remark, then prayed about it for a year before deciding to enter a seminary in 1988. He was ordained in 1994.

The church official who gave Binzer his job at the archdiocese said the ex-accountant's attention to detail helps him succeed.

"He's willing to face problems and deal with them," said retired Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk. "I knew that whatever it was he was going to get the job done."

Binzer has had to deal with child sexual abuse claims that rocked the Catholic Church.

He said the first thing he does is say, "I'm sorry."

"When somebody came in and explained what happened, I'd apologize," Binzer said. "I just tried to listen to what they had to say, tried to learn what I could about the impact on their life and their families."
