Jail warning to accountant who defrauded firms - this is plymouth

AN ACCOUNTANT who admitted defrauding and stealing from small businesses has been warned she faces jail.

Bookkeeper Alison Newton, aged 41, pictured left, pleaded guilty at Plymouth Crown Court to two counts of fraud and one of theft from traders.

Newton, of Yeomans Way in Plympton, admitted defrauding one businessman between July 2008 and September 2009 of 13,938.59.

She also admitted defrauding another firm out of money ? said in court to be "around 3,000 at most" between June 2009 and October 2009.

Newton also pleaded guilty to stealing a cheque worth 3,912.48 from another man some time between September 7, 2009 and September 11 of the same year.

Her pleas were accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The sentencing hearing was adjourned to July 8 for pre-sentence reports.

Newton was released on conditional bail.

Mr Recorder Letts noted that the offences were "essentially three breaches of trust over a period of time."

He warned Newton that the offences were "serious offences" which would "normally attract an immediate custodial sentence".
