Accountant answers call to the pulpit - Cincinnati.com

LATONIA - Ed Lybrook is an accountant by training and by trade, and at age 55, he's embarking on a second career as a part-time pastor.

Lybrook, of Hebron, will be installed as the pastor of Runyan Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 3625 Decoursey Ave., Latonia, on Sunday at a service at 10:30 a.m.

"I felt a calling through the church, and I was fortunate that my employer has offered me the flexibility to keep working and be a pastor," Lybrook said.

The church had been without a pastor since the retirement of 24-year pastor George Munzy in December.

Lybrook is able to lead the church after completing the denomination's Commission Ministry Program, aimed at helping small churches find qualified pastors.

Churches with a smaller congregation - like Runyan's 50 to 60 average Sunday attendance - can sometimes have difficulty raising enough funds to pay a full salary for a pastor with a master's degree in divinity.

The program, through the Disciples of Christ denomination, provides education, certification and review for pastors like Lybrook. Since earning the commission, Lybrook has served as a substitute preacher and an interim pastor at several Northern Kentucky churches.

When Runyan began its search, the church's general minister for Kentucky, Greg Alexander, recommended Lybrook and several others to the congregation.

"We were very impressed with him, and it was just a very nice fit," said Betty Kidd, worship committee co-chairman for the church.

"We're looking forward to some new energy," she said. "He seems to be very interested in reaching out to the community and this is an upbeat and positive time to be a part of our church."

Lybrook said he's eager to help the church continue to reach into the community.

"I'm most looking forward to working with the congregation to uncover what God wants us to be doing, how we reach out to people who are in need and who are hurting," he said.

Thousands expected for life walk

As many as 4,000 people are expected to make a brief walk from Kentucky to Ohio and back again to celebrate life with the Cross the Bridge for Life event Saturday.

"It's not a demonstration or a rally," said Karen Riegler, the Kentucky co-chair of the event.

Attendees will start arriving at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Newport Peace Bell and receive T-shirts, with a brief program at 1:45 p.m. Then at 2 p.m., they'll walk across the bridge.

"It's a beautiful, peaceful walk, and our only goal is that people just realize the importance of a life," said Faye Roch, director of the Diocese of Covington's Pro-life Office.

"Every year, it's grown; it's a family event, an event for young and old," she said.

Attendees will have free cookies from Servatii and Buskin and lunch from JTM, as well as face painting, clowns and balloons. The event ends at about 4 p.m.

"Our mission is to fill the Purple People Bridge with the joy of life, from the young in strollers to the elderly in wheelchairs," Riegler said.
