David Cameron gave MP top job in mistaken belief she was an accountant - Daily Mirror

DAVID Cameron gave young MP Chloe Smith a top job in the Treasury because he mistakenly believed that she was an accountant.

Other Tories had already been astonished by the 29-year-old?s rapid rise.

But her promotion to Economic Secretary might have been the result of a mix-up, it was revealed yesterday.

The PM ? keen to promote women after being stung by criticism that he was failing to connect with female voters ? told Ms Smith of his offer in a phone call.

She thanked Mr Cameron, according to a report, but said the prospect was ?a little daunting?.

The PM replied: ?Not daunting surely for someone who was a chartered accountant??

The MP, who did work for accountants Deloitte, confessed: ?Er, well, actually Prime Minister, I wasn?t an accountant.

?I was a management consultant in an accountancy firm.?

Smooth Mr Cameron, who was reshuffling his team after Liam Fox quit as Defence Secretary, said ?never mind? and welcomed her to his team.

Ms Smith, who was the youngest MP when she won the Norwich North by-election in 2009, got her new job amid fears that women were not happy with Mr Cameron, believing that they are hit hardest by government cuts.

Yesterday the Women?s Institute joined the row by accusing the PM of not listening to women, who have to ?push and fight? to gain recognition.

Ruth Bond, chairman of the National Federation of Women?s Institutes, called the decision to cut legal aid in divorce cases ?chilling?.

She also criticised ministers for scrapping an organisation that represents women in Whitehall.

Earlier this month, Mr Cameron apologised for remarks he made in the Commons that were seen as patronising to female MPs.

Denver accountant Anton to lead American Institute of CPAs - The Business Journal

Denver accountant Gregory J. Anton is the new chairman of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants , the world?s largest organization representing the accounting profession.

Anton, 47, was elected to the one-year volunteer post Wednesday by AICPA?s council.

In his acceptance speech, Anton detailed the ways technology is changing the profession. Automation has transformed the way financial information is collected, processed and presented, but a CPA?s value continues to lie in his or her ability to solve problems and identify opportunities for clients and employers, he said.

?As CPAs, we can decipher, disseminate and manage knowledge,? Anton said. ?This is what a computer or smartphone cannot do.?

Anton outlined a full agenda for the coming year, including a continued push for private company financial reporting standards, the debut of a new management accounting credential, and the celebration of AICPA?s 125th anniversary.

AICPA also is launching an initiative to mobilize retirement-age CPAs to lend their expertise to government, schools, nonprofit groups and the accounting profession as a way to give back and strengthen these organizations during a time of economic duress.

Anton is a co-founder of Anton Collins Mitchell LLP , an 85-employee accounting firm with offices in Denver and Greeley. The regional practice has been recognized for both its rapid growth over the past decade and the creation of a desirable work environment.

?I?m hoping to bring a new perspective to attracting and keeping young people involved in and committed to our profession,? Anton said.

Anton is the past president of the University of Northern Colorado Alumni Association and past chair of the UNC School of Accountancy Advisory Board.

When Sami Steigmann retired from being an accountant, he decided it was time to start giving back.

?I like to do two things. Okay, number one, I like to give tours. The other thing that I like to do is, I have a need, it's not a want, it's a need to share and to teach,? says Steigmann.

At 71 years old. this Manhattan resident volunteers at 18 locations. He's a Big Apple Greeter, gives tours of the Intrepid and at Governor's Island, and he helps at New York Cares and with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

NY1 joined Steigmann on his tour through The Museum of Jewish Heritage ? A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. He was born in Romania and is a Holocaust survivor himself.

?That he was able, through internal resources, to choose a path to do good in the world and make peoples' lives better is a remarkable story. He's a remarkable man,? says Dr. David Marwell, director of the museum.

?He does more work than I do, and I do a lot, so I'm really impressed that he's able to do all of these things especially for the museum,? says Monica Brandwein, volunteer coordinator.

Steigmann spends about 60 hours a week volunteering, and he says that number is about to increase thanks to a new organization he helped start.

Ten tips for picking the perfect accountant

Hiring an accountant for your business is no longer just about finding someone good at number-crunching and getting the maximum returns come tax-filing time.

Registered professional accountant Fernando Renna, for one, has seen the role change dramatically since he began his business 28 years ago in Cambridge, Ont.

?We?re not just bean counters any more,? says Mr. Renna, a spokesman for the board of directors of the Society of Professional Accountants of Canada. ?Thirty or 40 years ago, business owners may have said, ?Here are my books, do my taxes, goodbye and I?ll see you next year.? Now, accountants are expected to do a lot more.?

There is more demanded of accountants as businesses emphasize risk management ? one of the repercussions of the global economic downturn, according to a recent report by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, which is based in London, England.

?Business success depends on the ability to make sound decisions in a risky, uncertain world,? says the report titled Accountancy: The Future Outlook, based on interviews with 750 chief financial officers, partners and senior finance executives. ?Qualified accountants can help management teams to make those decisions, based on information drawn from accurate data and informed by broad business knowledge.?

Stan Swartz, of Sloan Partners LLP Chartered Accountants in Toronto, sees accountants as business sleuths.

?We look below the surface to see what helps business owners, or what?s causing [their business] not to do well, or give advice on how to turn it around or help them determine if it?s time to pack it in,? says Mr. Swartz, who is also a certified management consultant and financial planner.

When just starting out, business owners may be inclined to use a buddy from school who does some accounting, but that strategy just won?t do as the business grows and becomes more complex, stresses Frank Fazzari, a managing partner of Fazzari & Partners LLP Chartered Accountants in Vaughan, Ont.

So how do you go about finding a great accountant?

Here are 10 tips, including questions to ask in an interview:

  1. Get referrals:

Mr. Renna, Mr. Swartz and Mr. Fazzari say they get 90 per cent of their clients through word of mouth. ?When someone has been referred to me by a friend, I feel a double obligation to do my job well,? stresses Mr. Fazzari. You can also get referrals from professional associations.
  2. Determine your business needs:

Do you want an accountant to just handle the books and file your taxes, or someone who can give advice, and who will be there as your business grows? Most business owners want someone to advise them on a range of things. ?A lot of people go to their accountants before they go to a lawyer, because [we] can help them deal with leases, franchise agreements ? we have that well-rounded knowledge,? says Mr. Fazzari, adding it?s also important to ask if the accountant has the credentials to sign financial statements and do statutory compliance work.
  3. Get licensed candidates:

There are three professional accountancy designations, each with different educational requirements and duties. Chartered accountants (CA) have global recognition and their services range from startup counselling to acting as a trustee for receivership, insolvency or bankruptcy. Certified management accountants (CMA) integrate accounting expertise with advanced management skills, and certified general accountants (CGA) have a range of duties, from providing insights into financial statements and reports to overseeing internal accounting processes. ?You have to get a certain degree of education and a certain amount of experience before you get these designations, and there are ethical rules that have to be met,? says Mr. Swartz.

Wareham town accountant succeeded by private firm - SouthCoastToday.com

By

October 22, 2011 12:00 AM

WAREHAM ? The staffing upheaval in Wareham's accounting department may soon be over.

"We've appointed a town accountant," said Town Administrator Mark Andrews Friday, after accepting the recommendation of a screening committee. "It's a business arrangement with a company who had applied through the process."

Baystate Municipal Accounting Group is headed by Justin Cole, according to Andrews, who said the company comes "very well recommended" and is experienced at the town's accounting system. Most recently available Secretary of the Commonwealth filings indicate Baystate is a Maynard-based firm and lists Cole as president, secretary, treasurer and director.

Hiring the company would fill the position vacated by Elizabeth Zaleski, who left the post after a draft audit report for fiscal 2010 found a six-figure discrepancy between the accountant's general ledger and the treasurer's cash balance. Zaleski defended herself with a lawyer who contended the town hadn't followed the proper termination process. Ultimately, the town reached a settlement with Zaleski of $42,500.

Andrews said he didn't immediately know how many candidates had applied for the position. He said the screening committee was chaired by John Foster, treasurer/collector; Ana Miranda, director of operations/finance for Wareham Public Schools; Samuel Gray of the Finance Committee; and Selectman Ellen Begley. The matter must still be put before the Board of Selectmen, which has 15 days to review it, said Andrews, who said the company would work from Town Hall.

Accountants embrace levity to boost food bank project - Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

For several years now the local office of BKD, an accounting firm with offices all over the country, has made raising money for Community Harvest Food Bank one of its primary charitable causes.

It encourages staff members to contribute and asks them to approach friends, family members and even some clients for donations.

The big fundraising push comes just before Thanksgiving. As a lure, certain staff members agreed to do what you might call silly things if they met their fundraising goal.

One year they agreed to grow beards, not too daring, except for one accountant who couldnt grow one. In later years, they agreed to wear 3-inch red high heels to the company party, take the polar bear plunge in the St. Joseph River on New Years Day and yet another year to take part in a four-mile run on Thanksgiving Day, even though none of them was a runner.

The efforts have paid off pretty well. In the last eight years, BKD has raised $24,200, which it has contributed to the food banks annual Turkey Rally.

Food bank officials say that in the last four years its Turkey Rally has raised $27,409, plus around 1,000 turkeys and around 3,000 pounds of other food.

So BKDs efforts alone have raised a substantial portion of the Thanksgiving food drive. Last year, for example, the firm raised $8,200.

The problem with an annual project like this, though, is that the firm has to come up with a new silly stunt every year.

This year, the firm has set a goal of raising $6,000, and for each $1,500 raised one accountant will dress up as a living Christmas tree and put himself on display during BKDs client night at the Festival of Trees at the Embassy Theatre. If the push raises $9,000, the local offices overall boss will even dress as a tree.

If you want to look silly, I cant think of a better way to do it than to show up at a Christmas tree exhibition dressed as a Christmas tree.

One wonders, though, isnt there a certain amount of risk in this? These guys are accountants. Maybe some of them are closet joggers, but dont they wear gray suits and pore humorlessly over columns of numbers most of the time? Isnt showing up dressed as a Christmas tree a little out of character?

Well, yes, said Jeremy Carnahan, a CPA and manager with BKD, but theyve got a pretty personal relationship with their clients, and most of them know about the firms involvement in the food bank program, so theyll understand.

Plus, the stunt will take place at a party of sorts, not during a consultation on tax law.

Carnahan, who had no idea what an important part his firms fundraiser played in the food banks Thanksgiving food drive, would actually like to expand the overall effort.

My ultimate goal is to institutionalize this, Carnahan said. My long-range vision is to get other businesses involved. Id like it to be a food bank event, not just a BKD fundraiser. It could become one of the marquee fundraisers in Fort Wayne.

Carnahan and other staffers will be accepting donations from the people they approach.

For the general public, the food banks Turkey Rally will take place Nov. 3, when people will be encouraged to bring holiday food items and frozen turkeys or hams or cash donations to the food bank at 999 E. Tillman Road. Donations will be accepted from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. that day.

Frank Gray reflects on his and others experiences in columns published Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. He can be reached by phone at 461-8376, by fax at 461-8893, or by email at fgray@jg.net. You can also follow him at twitter.com (@FrankGrayJG).

Town accountant resigns

Team Cohasset is losing its financial quarterback.

Town accountant and finance director John Stanbrook resigned from his post in Cohasset on October 5 after nine months on the job. He will return to his previous position as town accountant in Mansfield on Oct. 31; his last day in Cohasset is Oct. 28.

Town manager Mike Coughlin announced Stanbrook?s departure during the Wednesday, Oct. 5 capital budget meeting; he had received Stanbrook?s resignation letter earlier that day. Since Coughlin started as Cohasset?s new town manager on August 1, he has continually referred to Stanbrook as ?Team Cohasset?s quarterback,? since so much responsibility was heaped onto the one position to reconcile Cohasset?s financial issues.

?He?s a great professional, and he has contributed a lot to the town,? Coughlin said on Friday. ?An indicator for a man is not only how he performs his job, but how he provides for his family.?

Stanbrook, who lives in Halifax, said the reason he is returning to his former post is for family reasons: Mansfield is closer to home, and working in Cohasset was a ?difficult time commitment,? Stanbrook said.

?The person who holds this job needs to put the time in to do it properly,? said Stanbrook. ?I?m passing the baton off to someone who can put in the time needed to right the ship.

?It was a good opportunity for me,? he added, ?but my personal situation has changed.?

For full story, see the Oct. 14 issue of the Cohasset Mariner.

Accountant shows tech is not just an engineer?s domain - Daily News and Analysis

It was an unexpected diversification for Vishwanath Alluri when in the nineties he took a plunge into the sector that was changing by the hour in terms of technology obsolescence.

But for this chartered accountant-turned-hospital CEO, who started IMIMobile, a value-added services (VAS) provider to then-nascent mobile phone segment in 1999, it was also a leap of faith.

?I had never worked in any technology MNC in Silicon Valley to learn what makes a technology company. It was all about ideation and I always had this dream of turning ideas into executable programmes. That?s exactly what I did in the company since inception,? Alluri, the CEO of the Hyderabad-based technology firm, said.

During his brief stint at the hospital, Alluri was also working on another project about designing telecom towers.

?The hospital assignment was all about management. But the real excitement was building up somewhere else,? Alluri, also known as Vish in the tech world, said.

The telecom towers business was equally challenging as the entire design changes as per the location of the tower and various external factors such as wind speed, he said.

?In the late 90s we saw the telecom revolution happening slowly but surely, and I had my own idea of approaching the sector. I always believed that you don?t have to be an engineer to think about technology. I was thinking from a user?s perspective. I was putting together a team to translate that into technology,? Alluri said while describing how he came to start IMIMobile, which has now become one of the top VAS players.

It now has a clientele of 71 mobile telecom operators, including Airtel, BSNL, MTN, Orange, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, NCell and Idea, in 59 countries.

IMIMobile?s success is in creating a modular platform for porting any value added service a mobile or media company wants to offer to its customers, he said.

Called DaVinci, the platform helps a company deploy an application and monetise it without having to spend much time on the offering.

The platform powers a wide range of services created, delivered and managed by IMImobile including social aggregation, contact management, mobile advertising, mobile marketing, messaging, storefronts, ringback tones and digital music services.

Alluri said the operator is relieved of technology or billing related issues since the platform does everything that is related to an application.

?The platform and our teams at the centralised data centre in Hyderabad track everything including the mobile user?s choices, the way the user is making use of the technology and the billing related issues,? Alluri said.

In about a decade of setting up and scaling up the operations, IMIMobile has also made a flurry of acquisitions to strengthen its platform.

In 2009 it acquired Mobytec, a technology platform powering Mobyko.com social aggregation service. IMIMobile now offers Mobytec as a fully managed service for mobile network operators.

The company also took over Music2You service from Nokia Siemens Networks to provide full-track music download and subscription services and UK-based digital content delivery services provider dx3, a digital content delivery firm. In October 2010 IMIMobile acquired Win, a UK mobile and wireless data services company. Last week it acquired UK-based digital agency Skinkers, a mobile apps developer.

?We are growing well. We are emerging into a clear leader in the space primarily due to the ease in deployment of application without having to shutdown the service by the operator,? he said.

Enthused by the response to his company?s services, Alluri is now looking to build an Open Mobile platform.

?Mobile phone has clearly become the most preferred advertising and campaign platform. So, a trader should be allowed to offer a scheme to the mobile users on the go. For instance, if a pizza store wants to offer a special discount to the commuters on a particular stretch of road during a particular hour of the day, the store owner should be able to send out an offer to all the mobile users on the road during that time without having to plan for it in advance,? he said.

The store owner should be able to log in to our network, type the offer details and transmit it. He can either select the telecom operator or make it common for any operator. That is the open mobile network we are working on,? he said.

Court told law firm accountant embezzled millions - ABC Online

Candice Marcus

Updated October 06, 2011 14:50:14

Prosecutors say they will lay more than 200 charges against an accountant who allegedly embezzled $2.7 million.

Craig Dean Raneberg, 46, has faced Adelaide Magistrates Court after being extradited from Sydney.

The court heard he had flown back to Australia from Thailand after his three-month visa expired and was arrested by Federal Police at the airport when about to fly out of Australia again.

Prosecutors say they will lay an additional 203 theft charges against Raneberg.

The money outstanding from an account at Adelaide law firm Minter Ellison has been revised upward to $2.7 million.

The court heard Raneberg worked as an accountant at Minter Ellison for a decade.

Prosecutors said the money remained unaccounted for and Raneberg's assets and bank accounts had been frozen as part of a civil lawsuit.

A decision on whether Raneberg should get home detention bail will be made next week.

Newark accountant sentenced in investment scam

By Kathy Lynn Gray

The Columbus Dispatch Friday October 7, 2011 4:13 PM

A scheme to pad his pockets by lying to investors and the Internal Revenue Service has landed a Newark accountant a six-year prison sentence.

U.S. District Judge James L. Graham sentenced Daniel D. Weddington, 64, today in a natural-gas drilling scam that involved fake documents, inflated income-tax deductions and a multi-million dollar rip-off.

He had pleaded guilty in April to charges of aiding and assisting in the filing of false income tax returns and obstructing an IRS audit.

The judge called Weddington?s actions ?blatant fraud? and said the consequences were ? horrendous for his clients.? He ordered Weddington to pay $3.2 million in restitution.

He faces additional criminal charges in Licking County Common Pleas Court for theft from individual investors. A trial in that case is scheduled for Nov. 30.

Weddington operated his scheme when he was part owner of Mid-Con Petroleum Inc. in Heath. He was in charge of all the company?s accounting and dealt with investors for the company?s natural gas wells.

Between 2004 and 2006, Weddington collected payments from investors. He then inflated the investment amounts on investors? tax returns he filed so he could collect investment commissions and investors could receive large tax refunds.

Weddington assured investors the tax returns were legal. Later they learned they had to pay back the IRS, as wells as penalties and audit fees.

?He?s a con man, completely,? said Janet S. Keipp, of Pataskala, after Weddington was sentenced. She said she and her husband, Karl, have paid about $90,000 as a result of the tax fraud and lost an additional $81,000 to Weddington.

She said she?s sure she?ll never see a dime in restitution.

Court documents show the company had more than 200 investors; Weddington?s federal criminal charges were related to only three as part of a plea agreement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel A. Brown said a long prison sentence was justified.

?The need to provide deterrence for others screams out in this case,? Brown said.

Weddington surrendered his Ohio public accountant?s license when he pleaded guilty.

In May, a 2007 federal civil case against him was settled when Graham ordered Weddington and Mid-Con co-owner James Earl, of Heath, to stop selling customers interest in wells owned by the company. In that case, investigators said the government?s loss was at least $5.7 million.

Earl was not charged in the federal criminal case.

Acting guv bent on stopping accountant?s reinstatement

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

ACTING Governor Genaro Alvarez said he will bring the appeal up to the Supreme Court just to stop the reinstatement of provincial accountant Merly Fortu.

?In my entire 24 years in public service, I have never experienced that somebody raised her voice against me, especially from a government employee,? Alvarez pointed out.

However, he said that he will leave the matter to Governor Alfredo Maraon Jr. on what legal action the Provincial Government would take on Fortu?s case.

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has ordered the reinstatement ofFortu as provincial accountant and ordered the payment of her ?back salaries and benefits corresponding to the period of her illegal termination.?

ProvincialLegal Officer Jose MariaValenciasaid the Capitol has one to 100 options to take,as he declared that theywill elevate the case against Fortu even up to the Supreme Court after the CSC ordered her reinstatement.

Valenciasaid he is already preparing the motion for reconsideration that will be filed with the CSC, adding that Fortu cannot yet return to her position.

Fortu was ordered dismissed from government service by Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Maranon for grave misconduct.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez, accusing Fortuof hostility and arrogance when the latter was asked to explain the delayed processingof purchase orders and requests for reimbursementsof expenses of Provincial Board Members.

Alvarez said that this happened in a meeting,July 1, 2010, where ?Out of the blue, Fortu spoke in a raised voicedenying any fault of her office.?

In his complaint, he said that instead of politely explaining how things work in her office, Fortu allegedly exchanged heated wordswith him and further arrogantly challenged and agitated all persons present during the meeting to take court action.

The decision will only become final ifCapitol will not file a motion for reconsideration within 15 days.

?In our analysis, the CSC decision was wrong. First, we complied with the procedure, we provided due process, but as to the findings of the Commission that the raising of the voice of the respondent was not arrogant, it is quite questionable,?Valencia said.

?How can the Commission say that it is not arrogant when they were not here?? he asked.

He added that based on the Commission, unless the Provincial Government can obtain a TRO and the Provincial Government will not implement it, they can be held in contempt.

Valencia said he is studying the said provision ?because I don?t think the CSC can cite us for contempt.?

He stressed that the case of Fortu is setting a bad example that elected public officials can just be shouted at.

Accountant placed on probation for cab company fraud in murder case - Syracuse.com

Syracuse, NY - The accountant for a local cab company was sentenced today to five years' probation for his role in a scheme that allowed the family of a murdered taxi driver to receive death benefits to which they were not entitled.

Vincent Kukys, 66, of Sunnycrest Road, Syracuse, pleaded guilty in July to charges of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and workers' compensation fraud.

He was accused of providing false documentation to the state Insurance Fund and false testimony before a workers' compensation board that Timothy Gordon was an employee of Century Transportation & Taxi.

Gordon, 29, of Carbon Street, actually was an employee of Yellow Taxi Co. when he was shot and killed by a fare during a robbery in January 2009.

Both cab companies are owned by Frank Manzi. But Yellow Taxi did not have workers' compensation insurance and Century did, according to authorities. The false information from Kukys allowed workers' compensation death benefits to be paid to Gordon's family after his murder.

Authorities said an investigation showed Gordon was added to the Century payroll records after his death.

Kukys also was ordered to pay restitution.

City names interim finance director

Senior accountant Jaye Monter has been selected as interim finance director for the city of Grand Island.

Mayor Jay Vavricek on Wednesday announced the interim appointment, which will need ratification by the Grand Island City Council during its Sept. 27 meeting.

A certified public accountant, Monter has 27 years of experience in accounting and finance, including 11 years as a member of the city's Finance Department. She has a bachelor of science comprehensive business administration degree with emphasis in accounting and finance from Kearney State College.

Monter has been with the Finance Department since 2000 and has served as senior accountant since 2003. Her responsibilities have included preparing, analyzing and interpreting financial statements and accounting records for the city, the Community Redevelopment Authority and business improvement districts. In addition, she has helped review, supervise and direct processes and procedures for the Finance Department, including the city's prioritization budget process.

Once approved for the appointment, Monter would start at step three of the treasurer/finance director pay scale, which is $81,852 annually.

Monter will serve in the role for an indefinite time period while the Human Resources Department renews its effort to fill the position permanently.

The finance director and city administrator position have been filled by Mary Lou Brown since December 2010. She was finance director at that time and was promoted to city administrator in March 2011.

Naming an interim finance director will allow Brown time to focus on the city administrator duties, Vavricek said.

"I acknowledge Mary Lou's many abilities, devotion and ability to maintain two jobs at once and feel confident Jaye's role in this interim leadership finance position is in the best interests of the people of Grand Island," he said.

Monter lives in Cairo and has served as the Cairo representative on the Regional Planning Commission for several years. Vavricek said because the appointment is an interim one, Monter would not need to resign from the commission. The commission makes non-binding recommendations regarding land use and development to the Grand Island City Council, Hall County board, Wood River City Council and villages of Alda, Doniphan and Cairo.

Should Monter's interim appointment turn into a permanent one, she would not have to leave Cairo to live in Grand Island, Vavricek said, because city code stipulates that department directors must live within 12 miles of Grand Island, and Monter complies with that.

Accountant tells Bajan CLICO policyholders to accept 40 cents on the dollar - Stabroek News

(Barbados Nation) Barbadian policyholders and investors are being encouraged to go the liquidation route instead of allowing a new company to be formed out of the remnants of CLICO International Life Insurance Ltd.

Veteran chartered accountant Douglas Skeete told Friday?s corporate policyholders? meeting with judicial managers, Deloitte, that it would be ?far better? for policyholders to settle for the likely return of just over 40 cents to the dollar from liquidation, than to wait five years for a new company and a promise of 100 per cent returns.

The idea of a new company was offered by Deloitte as the best of five options when the court-appointed judicial managers presented their recommendations to policyholders last week Thursday. Individual policyholders were promised the full value of their policies if the governments of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean inject capital into the new company.

But Skeete argued: ?It would be far better to take the 40 cents and go. I?m concerned with all that now has to be done, including transferring assets into this new company, looking for staff, opening bank accounts, setting up headquarters. I frankly don?t see all this happening in five years? time. In the meantime, the Executive Flexible Premium annuitants are not being paid any interest and I?m concerned about poor individuals who have put in money, cannot get a cent now and have to wait for the next five years or more. That is unacceptable,? Skeete told the gathering of about 20 people at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
