Emmett accountant appointed to Idaho State Tax Commission - Lewiston Morning Tribune

Idaho Gov. C.L. (Butch) Otter has appointed Emmett accountant Rich Jackson to a six-year term on the Idaho State Tax Commission.

Jackson, 67, has a long history of public service. He previously served as chairman of the Idaho Legislative Compensation Committee, which makes recommendations on pay and benefits for state lawmakers, as well as treasurer of the Idaho House of Representatives Republican Caucus and was a former chairman of the Gem County Republican Central Committee.

To ensure transparency and prevent the appearance of any conflict of interest, Jackson said he will step down from the withdraw from his accounting partnership and will recuse himself from any Tax Commission issues involving former clients, his partner or his employees.

The other appointees to the four-member commission include former Republican Senate President Pro Tem Bob Geddes and Democrats Tom Katsilometes and David Langhorst.

Jackson will fill the vacancy created when Otter appointed then-Commissioner Severina Haws to the Idaho Commission on Aging.

ACCOUNTANT SCAMMED: Accountant gets prison time for pocketing taxes - Atlantic City Press

As the majority owner of a Montale accounting firm, Barry S. Malkin knew he was courting trouble with Uncle Sam when he pocketed payroll taxes withheld from his employees - to give money to a woman in Costa Rica who lured him in with a tale.

The woman initially sought help to pay fees to recover a large inheritance, promising a quick return on Malkin's investment, with interest. Then she was stricken with cancer and needed help to pay her medical bills. Over 14 years, Malkin, 69, of Upper Saddle River, a certified public accountant who had never run afoul of the law, shelled out more than $1 million.

He never got a cent back. Instead, on Wednesday, he got a sentence of prison time from a federal judge perplexed by Malkin's behavior.

Tuckahoe accountant gets prison for phony tax documents - LoHud.com

WHITE PLAINS ? A Tuckahoe accountant has been sentenced to five months in prison for preparing phony tax documents for clients.

Pierce Perrine, 52, pleaded guilty in September to obstruction of justice, admitting he had fabricated IRS documents.

Perrine was charged in April 2010 in a criminal complaint filed by agents with the federal Treasury Department.

In the complaint filed by Agent William Kalb, investigators said Perrine created four bogus documents for two clients that purported to remove tax levies on the clients.

Those bogus documents releasing the levies were then sent to the clients' banks, freeing up funds that should have remained held.

As a result, $28,252 in taxes went unpaid.

A lawyer for Perrine did not return calls seeking comment. His wife hung up on a reporter.

In court papers filed before his sentencing by U.S. District Judge Cathy Seibel, Perrine's lawyer, Lawrence Maffei, said Perrine never intended for the government to suffer any loss. Maffei said Perrine never intended to deprive the IRS of money owed but "sought to rectify stories that he thought were inaccurate."

Seibel also fined Perrine $10,000 and sentenced him to one year of post-release supervision during which time he can not do any work involving taxes.
